Interview with Emma (31), Manchester About years of sensitive, reactive skin and the unexpected fix that finally made a difference
How would you describe your skin before? Reactive is the best word for it. Not full-blown eczema or a diagnose
How would you describe your skin before?
Reactive is the best word for it. Not full-blown eczema or a diagnosed condition, just skin that never seemed settled. Red patches that came and went, a constant feeling of irritation around my jawline and cheeks, and this general sensitivity that made trying new products feel like a gamble. I spent a lot of time and money on dermatologist appointments, patch tests and elimination diets. Nothing came back conclusive. I was told I had sensitive skin and to keep my routine simple and gentle, which I did, but the underlying irritation never fully went away.
Did it affect your confidence?
More than I liked to admit at the time. I work in a client-facing job and I was very aware of my skin on bad days. I got good at covering it with makeup but that created its own cycle. Heavier coverage meant more potential irritation, which meant more coverage the next day. There were mornings where I'd look in the mirror and just feel tired before the day had even started.
When did water first come up as a possible cause?
A colleague mentioned it almost in passing. She'd moved from Manchester to Amsterdam for a year and said her skin had completely calmed down while she was there. When she came back and her skin flared up again within a few weeks, she started wondering if the water had something to do with it. I looked it up and found that chlorine in tap water can disrupt the skin barrier and trigger irritation in people who are already sensitive. I'd never once thought about what was in my shower water.
What did you do with that information?
I started paying more attention to when my skin was worst and noticed it was often worse in the morning after showering rather than in the evening. That pattern hadn't occurred to me before. I'd always assumed my skincare routine was the variable, not the shower itself, and that's when I decided it was worth trying a filtered showerhead.
Why Drople?
A lot of options felt overcomplicated or expensive and some required fitting a whole new shower system, which wasn't something I wanted to deal with in a rented flat. Drople attaches to your existing shower in a couple of minutes and has a filter you replace every 90 days. I ordered it mostly because the barrier to trying it was low and if it didn't help I hadn't lost much.
What happened when you started using it?
Within the first week the irritation around my jaw, which was usually worst in the morning, felt calmer. I told myself not to read into it too early but it kept being calmer. After two weeks the red patches on my cheeks had faded noticeably and by the end of the first month I was having more good skin days than bad ones for the first time in years.
Did you change anything else at the same time?
I was very deliberate about not changing anything else precisely because I wanted to know if the showerhead was actually doing something. Same cleanser, same moisturiser, same diet and same sleep schedule. The only new variable was Drople, which made it easier to trust that the improvement was real.
How is your skin now?
Genuinely the best it has been in about six or seven years. The constant background irritation is gone and I have actually been able to start slowly reintroducing products I had given up on because I assumed I was allergic to them. My makeup routine has simplified a lot too, which means less on my skin and less potential irritation. It has become a much better cycle than the one I was stuck in before.
What would you tell someone in the same situation?
If you have sensitive or reactive skin and you have tried the obvious things and you are still not getting anywhere, think about your water. I filtered my drinking water for years because I cared about what went into my body but it never occurred to me to think about what I was covering my entire skin in every single morning. It did not fix everything overnight but it removed something that was constantly working against me, and that made everything else work better.
